The Northeast will have a pair of senior representatives at this year’s Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas.
Richland Northeast quarterback Will Wilson and defensive lineman Sterling Sanders were selected to the South Carolina team facing North Carolina at the Dec. 21 event in Spartanburg. It’s the 88th edition of the All-Star game which raises funds to support the Shriners Bowl.
Wilson was one of three quarterbacks selected by Shrine Bowl head coach Reggie Kennedy of Manning. The North Carolina State commit will team up with Irmo’s A.J. Brand and Westside’s Cutter Woods.
Sanders was one of five defensive lineman who was chosen, a list which includes Clemson commit Amare Adams of South Florence.
Both Northeast players have been instrumental in their team’s success. Wilson has thrown for 1,475 yards and 16 touchdowns and rushed for 600 yards and 13 scores.
He was on a recruiting visit to North Carolina State, where he’s verbally committed, last week when the Cavaliers suffered their first loss of the season in triple overtime to Dreher 35-34.
Blythewood (6-1, 2-1) is coming off a 37-24 win over Lugoff-Elgin. For the season, Sanders has 30 tackles, 10 for loss, five sacks and 15 quarterback pressures for the Bengals.
Gidron reclassifies
This past week saw two of the Palmetto State’s top wide receivers made future-changing announcements.
In both cases, Ridge View’s Jordon Gidron and Irmo’s Donovan Murph revealed their plans to reclassify from juniors to seniors. Should they continue to meet the academic requirements, the two would be able to graduate this year.
This allowed Gidron to verbally commit to the University of South Carolina.
“The Gamecocks continue to excite me as a program because I can see how Coach (Shane) Beamer is developing them as a team and I like how Coach Furrey is developing his players,” Gidron told On3.
Gidiron is currently sidelined with a knee injury. Without him, the Blazers crushed Spring Valley 54-14. Tre Howard threw for 300 yards and four touchdowns and rushed for 74 yards and two scores for Ridge View (3-3, 2-0).
Friday was the 20th straight loss for the Vikings (0-7, 0-3).
Cardinal Newman falls to Northwood Academy
Despite three touchdowns by quarterback Jason Horton and 115 rushing yards and a touchdown from Caleb Ford, the Cardinals fell 49-31 in the WACH 57 Sonic Friday Night Rivals Game of the Week.
For the season, Ford continues to lead the Palmetto State in rushing with 1,357 yards and 10 touchdowns for the Cardinals (2-4, 1-2).
S.C. High School League
pushes season back a week
As schools recover from the damage inflicted by Hurricane Helene, the South Carolina High School League has agreed to adjust the remaining schedule.
A 9-4 vote by the Executive Committee approved the decision to extend the regular season by one week. This means the playoffs will begin Nov. 15 and the state championship games will take place Dec. 12-14 at South Carolina State University.
In addition, the Touchstone Energy Bowl in Myrtle Beach will now take place the same day as the Shrine Bowl in Spartanburg on Dec. 21.
