The Women’s Basketball Invitational Tournament provided a “shining moment” for Westwood High graduate Unique Drake of St. John’s.
The redshirt senior guard scored a career and school post-season record 37 points on March 22 in the Red Storm’s 79-60 win over Florida in the opening round in Gainesville.
She was the third player in program history to score 35 points or more twice in a single season. Drake also made a career-best 13 field goals.
“To start a game, I just try to do everything that my team needs me to do, whether that’s score or play defense,” Drake said. “I just try to do everything my team needs me to do. I really don’t focus much on just shooting the ball, I just do what’s the best for my team. The basket was kind of big tonight, so they were going in.”
St. John’s WBIT run ended two days later in a 72-71 loss at Toledo. Drake scored a game-high 21 points and finished her career having played in a school record 147 career games and third-most 3-pointers (79) in a single season.
