The award was presented by the Richland County Recreation Commission and Richland County Recreation Foundation. A total of 17 senior varsity players were nominated from Richland County School District 1, District 2, Richland-Lexington District 5, and the South Carolina Independent School Association.
“I’m just grateful to be in this situation,” Wilson said. “I thank God every day. I cherish every moment and I’m blessed.”
A Shrine Bowl selection and Mr. South Carolina Football finalist, the North Carolina State signee as of Wednesday led the Cavaliers to an 8-4 record and the second round of the Class 4A playoffs. Despite missing two games recovering from knee surgery, Wilson still threw for 2,482 yards and 22 touchdowns and rushed for 1,144 yards and 20 total yards.
He finished his high school career with 11,080 total yards and 119 touchdowns.
Other nominees for the award included running backs Chase Brown (Blythewood) and Caleb Ford (Cardinal Newman), wide receiver Kellen Dimes (Spring Valley), linebacker Ako Taylor (Westwood), defensive tackle Cleve Tellery II (Ridge View) and offensive lineman Cayden McFadden (Dutch Fork).
