Last week, we covered right-arm extension after impact. This week, we’re focusing on the left arm (the back arm) during the backswing.
Most golfers have heard the classic advice: “Keep your left arm straight.”
However, many interpret this as keeping the arm stiff or locked, which actually restricts the swing.
Here’s the key:
Using the bicep contracts the muscle, which shortens the arm and bends the elbow.
The tricep is what actually extends the left arm, pushing the hand away from the shoulder.
A proper golf swing is circular, and to generate speed — and therefore distance — the swing arc should be as wide as possible. That means keeping your hands as far from your swing center (your neck) as you can throughout the entire motion.
As you exercise this winter, focus more on strengthening the triceps, not the biceps.
Triceps extend.
Biceps bend.
The stronger your triceps, the easier it is to maintain good arm extension and develop a wider, more powerful swing arc.
Get golf fit.
