Cardinal Newman was down in the Best-of-Three SCISA Class 4A final to Hilton Head Christian Academy.

The Cardinals fell in Game One 11-5 at home and looked to even the series Tuesday at Hilton Head Island.

Slade Burd hit a home run on the fourth pitch of the game to give Hilton Head Christian the lead. It was answered a half inning later by a homer by Will Spotts.

The Eagles responded with eight unanswered points to take a 9-1 lead. A 3-run homer by Dylan Williams cut the deficit to 9-4, but Hilton Head Christian added two insurance runs in the Top 7th.

S.C. High School League playoffs

The Blythewood baseball team found itself in a Class 5A Division I elimination game on Wednesday.

The Bengals faced Boiling Springs with the winner facing Spartanburg Friday in the District 2 final. Blythewood would need to win all three games to reach the Lower State playoffs.

On Monday, the Bengals fell 7-5 to the Vikings. Spartanburg jumped out to a 7-3 advantage after five innings and held on despite two home runs by Sergio Melendez.

In softball, Blythewood advanced to Wednesday’s District 2 final following a 10-0 shutout of Wade Hampton on Monday.

Makalah Ford went 3-4 with five RBI and two home runs to lead the Lady Bengals. Charlotte Martin held the Lady Generals to four hits in seven shutout innings.

Blythewood faced J.L. Mann on Wednesday, with the winner facing Boiling Springs in the district final.
