Megan Assey is coaching girls’ basketball again in the Northeast.

This time, she’s leading a team in the SCISA ranks at Cardinal Newman High School. Assey takes over a Lady Cardinals’ program that has posted three straight losing seasons since winning its last state title.

“Coach Assey is without a doubt one of the best coaches not only in South Carolina, but across the country as well,” said Will Eudy, Athletics Director at Cardinal Newman School. “We are thrilled to welcome her to the Cardinal Newman family and excited to see the impact she will make—not just on the court, but in the formation of our young women.”

The new job also brings the entire Assey family together at one school. Husband Charles Assey Jr. is the school principal and their two children are students.

“This is truly the most unexpected move of my career that was certainly divinely orchestrated,” she said. “This opportunity is all about family. For 12 years, we’ve burnt the candle at both ends going in opposite directions. This brings us together and gives me an opportunity to potentially coach our daughter.”

Assey plans to utilize the coaching approach she successfully used at River Bluff and Spring Valley t Cardinal Newman. It will be, in her words, a “step-by-step” process from finalizing a staff to implementing an off-season training regimen for the players.

“I truly think we will have one of the most knowledgeable coaching staffs in the state,” she said. “From there, it will simply be about finding a way to be 1 percent better each day & working to be champions in life.”

As Assey rebuilds the program, she hopes to instill pride back in the program. She also wants to help mold the “student-athlete” into future leaders who will make a lasting impact on the lives of others.
