Philharmonic Celebrates America’s 250th Anniversary
The South Carolina Philharmonic will launch its celebration of America’s 250th anniversary with a special concert event, “The Dream of America,” on March 14.
The performance blends orchestral music and theater, featuring masterworks, a world premiere and a staged symphony highlighting the immigrant experience.
At the heart of the program is Ellis Island: The Dream of America by composer Peter Boyer. The work combines actors and orchestra to tell true stories of immigrants arriving in the United States. Acting for the production is directed by Chad Henderson, while the orchestra will be conducted by Philharmonic Music Director Morihiko Nakahara.
The concert also features a double-bill of music by Maurice Ravel, including Alborada del gracioso and the famed orchestral piece Boléro.
Another highlight of the evening will be the world premiere of Wind Across a Cloudless Firmament by composer Shaosheng Li, performed by internationally acclaimed Chinese soprano Gong Shuang.
The performance is part of the Philharmonic’s Season 61 Capital Concert Series, “Your Brain on Art.” Tickets range from $27 to $71 and are available at scphilharmonic.com or by calling the Koger Center for the Arts box office at 803-251-2222, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
