Adults in Richland, Lexington, and Aiken Counties are getting more opportunities to improve their reading, writing, and math skills thanks to Literacy SC, formerly known as Turning Pages SC. For over 57 years, the nonprofit has helped individuals overcome literacy barriers, and now it’s expanding its mission to include new programs tailored to modern needs.
“Many adults have spent years hiding their struggles with reading,” said Lisa Cole, CEO of Literacy SC. “We’re here to offer dignity, independence, and the tools they need to fully participate in their lives. With our rebrand, we’re growing beyond reading to include practical skills that support upward mobility.”
The organization’s flagship Turning Pages Adult Reading Program provides free, one-on-one tutoring for adults, thanks to volunteers trained in specialized adult education techniques. In addition, Literacy SC is rolling out several new programs, including:
With partnerships at 24 public libraries and a central office in Columbia, Literacy SC eliminates common learning barriers. There are no complicated forms, no technology requirements, and no rigid schedules. All services remain free for those enrolled in the Turning Pages program, while some new programs will have small fees to help fund the nonprofit’s efforts.
Adults ready to improve their skills can call 803-216-5663 (Richland & Lexington) or 803-679-1990 (Aiken) to enroll in the free Turning Pages Adult Reading Program.
“While reading remains our foundation, these new programs let us meet our community’s growing needs,” said Brittany Smith, Board Chair. “We’re creating lasting change, one step at a time.”
Take the first step today with Literacy SC’s accessible, barrier-free approach to education.
