Central Carolina Community Foundation (CCCF) President and CEO JoAnn Turnquist has announced her retirement, marking the end of an era for one of the Midlands’ most influential philanthropic organizations. Her retirement is set for April 2024, coinciding with her 15th anniversary at the helm of the Community Foundation.
Turnquist expressed her gratitude for the support received throughout her tenure, stating, “I am thankful to our grantee partners, community organizations and leaders, philanthropy colleagues, public officials, and private business partners for supporting our work. They have been inspirational allies in upholding the Foundation’s mission and core values.”
Under Turnquist’s visionary leadership, CCCF has experienced unprecedented growth, with assets totaling nearly $220 million and more than $270 million awarded in grants and scholarships. Notable achievements during her tenure include the establishment of the One SC Fund, the state’s disaster recovery fund, which has deployed $8.8 million in grants since 2015. She also played a pivotal role in the creation of the Collaboration Zone, a hub for the region’s nonprofits, and the introduction of initiatives like Midlands Gives, which has raised over $24 million for Midlands’ nonprofit organizations since its inception in 2014.
“When I came to the Foundation in 2009, we had a staff of seven, about $67 million in assets, and had awarded more than $50 million in grants and scholarships,” reflected Turnquist. “I have been fortunate to work with superb staff who have a passion for the mission of the Foundation and a commitment to excellence in their work. Together, we have transformed our organization.”
The search for Turnquist’s successor will be led by a committee consisting of seven current and past CCCF Board of Trustees members. An external consultant has been engaged to ensure a comprehensive search process.
Cory Manning, current board Chair and head of the search committee, praised Turnquist’s leadership, saying, “She will surely be missed and hard to replace, but she has put the Foundation in an excellent position to continue its tremendous success. That is a legacy great leaders leave.”
Turnquist expressed confidence in the selection process, stating, “Our Trustees have worked closely with me and our talented staff to ensure that our mission and strategic plan has always guided the Foundation’s philanthropy, programming, and leadership in the community.”
As JoAnn Turnquist prepares to step down, the Midlands community acknowledges her tremendous impact and contributions. “It has been a tremendous honor to lead the Foundation,” said Turnquist, reflecting on her tenure with humility and gratitude for the opportunity to serve the Midlands of South Carolina. The CCCF community eagerly awaits the next chapter and is committed to building upon the legacy of excellence that Turnquist leaves behind.
