Students pursuing undergraduate or graduate degrees in music have the opportunity to apply for the DAR Marian Anderson Legacy Scholarship, a one-time $5,000 award offered by the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). The deadline to apply is January 31, 2025.

This prestigious scholarship honors the legacy of Marian Anderson, the legendary African American contralto whose career and civil rights advocacy inspired millions.

“Marian Anderson’s legacy lives on in aspiring musicians who aim for excellence, contribute to their communities, and stand for what is right,” said Pamela Wright, DAR President General.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the scholarship, applicants must:

  • Be accepted to or currently enrolled in an accredited U.S. university or college.
  • Have a concentration in music, such as performance, composition, theory, or education.
  • Maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent).

Applicants are also required to submit references through the application system and should request these in advance to meet the January 31 deadline.

Humanitarian Focus

In addition to academic excellence, the scholarship emphasizes a commitment to community. Applicants must include a personal statement detailing their volunteer or humanitarian contributions, reflecting Marian Anderson’s lifelong dedication to sharing her talent and giving back.

Preference for Philadelphia Students

Students from the Philadelphia metropolitan area, Anderson’s hometown, will be given preference for the award, even if their studies take them outside the region.

Scholarship Renewal

Although the scholarship is not automatically renewed, recipients may reapply each year for up to four consecutive years.

This award is made possible by the Marian Anderson Legacy Fund, established by DAR to honor Anderson’s life and legacy. For more information about the scholarship or to apply, visit www.dar.org/MarianAnderson.
