Vector Control staff are gearing up for Richland County’s annual mosquito-spraying campaign.
As part of efforts to control the adult mosquito population, crews will conduct surveillance for the insects, treat larval breeding sites and spray in densely populated areas of the County.
Trucks will spray for adult mosquitoes between midnight and dawn; however, spraying could happen earlier in the day, depending on conditions. When a spray truck is nearby, residents should remain indoors to allow the driver to thoroughly cover the area.
Residents can help reduce mosquitoes by inspecting their property for potential breeding sites and taking the following preventive measures:
• Empty, overturn or remove water-holding containers such as tires, cans, buckets and flowerpots. Visit the County’s YouTube page for a video example.
• Follow label instructions when using EPA-registered insect repellents containing DEET, Picaridin, IR3535 or oil of lemon eucalyptus.
• Clear drainage ditches of debris and weeds.
• Pack tree holes with sand.
• Clean clogged roof gutters.
• Keep boats overturned, drained or covered (covers should not collect water).
• Stock ornamental ponds with top-feeding minnows.
• Maintain swimming pools properly.
• Change the water in pet dishes, birdbaths and containers used to root plants at least weekly.
• Make sure rain barrels have screens to prevent mosquitoes from accessing the collected water, and use the water as soon as possible.
At this time of year, crane flies, beneficial insects that are often mistaken for giant mosquitoes, are common. Crane flies do not bite and are frequently seen near windows and doors.
