As part of its “Columbia Streams Art” program, the City of Columbia introduced its first mini libraries at St. John’s Baptist Church and Preparatory School. Mayor Daniel Rickenmann, District One City Councilwoman Tina Herbert, and Pastor Dr. Jamey O. Graham were on hand to celebrate the launch. The mini libraries, aimed at boosting literacy and fostering community connection, are planned for over 20 sites throughout the city.

“These mini libraries bring books right into our neighborhoods,” Mayor Rickenmann noted. “It’s about sparking young minds and making resources accessible close to home.”

Styled as repurposed newspaper vending machines, the libraries are painted by local youth in Columbia Parks & Recreation programs and seniors from the Lourie Center’s art classes. Community members donated the books through a recent City Hall book drive, ensuring the libraries offer a variety of titles.

The first mini libraries have been placed at:

  • Nay’s Early Learning Academy – 4901 Monticello Road
  • Got Milk Cereal Bar – 3730 B North Main Street
  • St. John Preparatory School – 3404 West Beltline Boulevard
  • Lourie Senior Center – 1650 Park Circle

Additional locations, including the Lourie Senior Center, will also stock resources tailored to their communities, such as senior information guides.
