Richland County residents recently shared their perspectives on a proposed Transportation Sales Tax referendum during a public hearing held in the council chambers. The event saw active participation, with more than 25 residents signing up to speak and an additional four comments read aloud for the record.
The public hearing, which can be viewed on the county’s YouTube channel, was part of the county council’s ongoing effort to engage the community in discussions about local transportation needs and funding options.
Following the public hearing, the county council gave the referendum a third and final reading on July 16, ultimately voting to place it on the ballot for the upcoming November election. If passed, the referendum would authorize a one percent transportation sales and use tax.
The proposed tax aims to address critical transportation infrastructure needs, including road maintenance, public transit improvements, and the development of pedestrian and cycling paths. The funds generated from the tax would be used to enhance the overall transportation system in Richland County, improving safety and accessibility for all residents.
Residents who are interested in learning more about the referendum and its potential impact can find detailed information on the County’s official website.
