“If you think you can, or you think you can’t — you’re right.”
A positive mindset is essential in golf. You need to visualize the result you want, not the one you’re trying to avoid. The last thought you have before a swing is often what your brain locks onto.
The mind does not process negatives effectively. When you tell yourself, “Don’t hit it in the water,” your brain tends to drop the “don’t” and focus on the hazard instead. As a result, you increase the likelihood of doing exactly what you were trying to avoid.
Instead, focus on a clear, positive target. Picture the ball landing safely on the green, and commit to that image.
I’d also like to invite readers to participate. If you have a specific issue in your swing, consider sending a still photo of the problem area. I may use it in a future column to provide instruction and feedback that can help you—and others—improve.
