Columbia Northeast post contributes $500 to support Memorial Day tradition honoring veterans

Members of the American Legion Larry Jeffers Post 195 gathered June 8 at Lugoff House of Pizza & Subs for their monthly Dining Out event, an initiative designed to strengthen community connections, support local businesses and provide an opportunity for post and auxiliary members and their families to gather in a relaxed setting.

The event featured a special guest, Mark Stears, commander of American Legion Columbia Northeast Post 182.

During the gathering, Stears presented a $500 donation to Post 195 to help purchase new and replacement American flags used at Fort Jackson National Cemetery. The cemetery’s Memorial Day observance requires more than 14,000 flags to be placed at veterans’ gravesites each year.

The donation was presented to Kate Brock, first vice commander of Post 195, following discussions between members of the two posts regarding the ongoing effort to ensure every grave at the national cemetery is properly honored.

The contribution will assist Post 195 in maintaining and replacing flags used during the annual Memorial Day tribute.
