In 1932, the University of South Carolina School of Education and the Columbia City Schools established University High School as the first “practice-teaching school” in the city.

The initial student body consisted of 130 students. The school closed in 1966 when the University needed the room to expand. During its existence, the school graduated 1,058 students and had approximately 1,000 teachers who received their first teaching experience there. When the school closed, Principal C.B. Harvey (the second of only two principals the school had) established a scholarship for USC education students aspiring to become secondary school teachers. The scholarship was named in honor of Dr. J. McTyeire Daniel, a long time professor in the School (now College) of Education. Dr Harvey served as the primary fundraiser for the scholarship and in 2006 his name was added to the scholarship. Today the fund grown to over $105,000 and has aided over 40 students in their education.

Former students of University High have started a tradition of having an “ALLCLASS” reunion every three years. The reunion in 2017 will be the tenth. A part of the reunion efforts are directed toward raising funds for the Scholarship The goal for the Tenth Reunion is to grow the fund to over $107,000. A tax–deductible gift to the fund may be made by check payable to The Harvey–Daniel Fund, USC Educational Foundation, University of South Carolina, 820 Main St, Columbia, SC, 29169.
