Wednesday mornings before school, Blythewood High School JROTC cadets who have been selected due to their proficiency in their current position and overall leadership qualities attend Promotion or Leadership Board.

Cadets aiming for an NCO (Non commissioned officer) rank attend promotion board while cadets aiming for an Officer rank attend Leadership board.

This week was the Bengal Battalion’s first board of the 2017-2018 school year.

During Promotion Board, cadets are interviewed by the First Sergeant of each company and the Battalion Command Sergeant Major. During Leadership Board, cadets are interviewed by each Company Commander and the Battalion Commander.

“I like seeing cadets who have potential come in with confidence and represent not only themselves but also their company as a whole,” said Cadet Thomas Sedio (Charlie Company First Sergeant), a member of the promotion board.

During both boards, cadets are tested on their knowledge of rank, chain of command, first aid, and other military knowledge. Scoring is based on cadets’ appearance, knowledge, and level of confidence.

Not only does attending board instill discipline and motivation in cadets, but it prepares them for life outside of school by promoting communication skills, self-confidence, determination, and enthusiasm.
