A new large-scale mural celebrating the skyline and culture of Columbia now greets visitors at Columbiana Centre.

The installation was commissioned through the Columbia Streams Art program in partnership with the shopping center. The project highlights local artistic talent while transforming one of the mall’s most visited gathering spaces into a tribute to the capital city.

Created by Columbia-based artist Ija Monet, the two-part mural spans 235 feet and rises nine feet high, wrapping around the vaulted upper walls above the food court.

One 127-foot section features a dynamic interpretation of Columbia’s skyline, incorporating recognizable buildings, colleges, universities and architectural landmarks that shape the city’s silhouette. The adjoining section shifts from structures to stories, highlighting bridges, fountains, recreation and cultural activities that bring Columbia’s neighborhoods and public spaces to life.

“I wanted to include all of the landmarks that make Columbia so wonderful and make sure to show everything Columbia has to offer,” Monet said. “This city has so much personality and pride, and I wanted that to shine through.”

Daniel Rickenmann said the project reflects the importance of public art in connecting communities.

“Public art helps tell Columbia’s story and brings our communities together,” Rickenmann said. “This mural celebrates what makes our city special and highlights the incredible talent we have right here at home.”

Mitchell Whitting said the mall was proud to partner with the city on the project.

“Columbiana Centre serves as a gathering place for the Columbia community,” Whitting said. “Partnering with the City to showcase a mural by a local artist reflects our commitment to celebrating the creativity, culture and pride that define this region.”

Monet is a self-taught painter, muralist and entrepreneur known for colorful, character-driven works that often highlight people, everyday culture and themes of optimism.
