The Northeast area finds itself with three high school head football coaching openings.

A week after Corey Helms left Cardinal Newman to take over at Pelion, Westwood head coach Robert O’Connell announced his resignation.

He coached three seasons with the Redhawks. This past season was his most successful, leading Westwood to a 6-6 record, which included beating archrival Blythewood in the “Battle of the Axe” and winning a post-season game for the first time in five years.

O’Connell previously served as head coach at Richard Winn Academy. He was also an assistant coach at Ridge View, Irmo and Wilson. This is the second coaching vacancy in Richland School District Two as it’s still looking to replace Nygel Pearson at Spring Valley.

Richland School District Two is still seeking to replace Nygel Pearson at Spring Valley High School. He resigned after going 0-21 in two seasons.
