Blythewood native Gabe Brandner has been nominated for the 2017 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.

The Allstate AFCA Good Works Team is a service award in college football, bringing together select student-athletes from all divisions of play to honor their dedication to volunteerism and enriching the lives of others.

Brandner gives back in many ways, including:

  • Co-founding Lìderes Unidos Futbol Club, a free youth soccer program designed to encourage academic success and promote leadership qualities within students from several local high schools. Through Gabe’s leadership, Lideres Unidos raised more than $4,000 for the organization to cover start-up costs like equipment and securing field space. He also worked with a local sponsor to provide the children with jerseys. The program has become a safe haven for at-risk youth in Durham, providing a constructive way for youth to spend their time after school.
  • Participating with the National Inclusion Project, an organization dedicated to children with special needs; serving as a Big Brother for a younger teammate for the past two seasons; and dancing for Duke’s Dance Like the Stars annual fundraiser, where he teamed up with other community leaders to learn a dance that raised more than $1,300 for children with disabilities.

From the 146 nominees, a final roster of 22 award recipients – comprised of 11 players from the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision and 11 players from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, Divisions II, III and the NAIA – will be unveiled in September. College football fans are encouraged to follow along and join in on the conversation by searching and using #GoodWorksTeam.
